here you can see the sinkhole is pretty big, about 30 feet across and you can actually put your hand underneath the median there and it will come out on the other side. it is -- it has forced crews to shut down one lane of highway 87 southbound in the alma avenue on-ramp. caltrans discovered the problem tuesday, they came out, they poured some gravel and then last night they compressed that gravel and found that it sunk about a foot below the earth's surface and you can see where that concrete is exposed, all the cracks there. so they shut down some lanes on the freeway at 9:00 last night. we are close to west virginia street just to give you an idea of where we are on 87, and again one southbound lane is closed as is the alma avenue off-ramp. but the on-ramp from 280 is open and crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sinkhole so you definitely want to avoid this area. we would suggest using south alma avenue to -- expressway to 87 or also take monterey road as well and cut across to west capitol expressway to 87th. live in san jose, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu chann

some big financial problems. the agency says it lost $8 billion last year. part of it is because of the recession, there has been a steep decline in advertising mail but there's also a lot of first class mail that is now being sent electronically and packages are being carried bid private carriers. the postal service says it will consider opening village offices. postoffice desks and counters that would be placed inside businesses, town halls and community centers. postal service is expected to -- across the country for possible closure. we don't know yet which bay area postoffices may be on that list or how many of them. but about 10 minutes ago i did get a response from a u.s. postal service spokesperson in washington, d.c. she said at 10:30 eastern time they're going to be sending out that list of the 3,600 postoffices. so 10:30 eastern time so about an hour and a half from now for our pacific time. we should get that list and take a look at it to see how this is going to affect postal service here in the bay area. allie rasmus. >>> time now 6:08. the stand off in washington i

looks good getting up to highway 18. at 5:08 let's go to steve. >> another big fog bank out there and it's giving us also some drizzle so we have to deal with that. today will be very similar to what we had over the weekend. breezy to windy at times, already gusts to 30. about the same tomorrow, by the end of the week looks like that fog will be getting a little shallower, it does look warmer 80s and 90s coming back for us in the sacramento san joaquin valley. we keep dealing with a low coming in from the pacific west, that ramps up the fog. then high pressure in the middle of country tries to head back west but it's been trying to do that for the last two months. we have some fog in the coast, but it has no problem getting back out. everybody coast and inland 80 degrees. west south wind or a west wind when it's 27 at travis and southwest at vacaville. any time they get a south wind in this kind of a pattern that's a cool breeze. once the low kicks out, temperatures will gradually start to come up. it's a gradual the warm warm up. breezy to windy and that will be out of the west. drizzl

. the big mistaking that had people thinking they had gotten the bargain of the year. >>> but first, here are your options. resign or be fired. that is the ultimatum that was just given to nearly 200 educators tied to one of the largest school cheating scandals in u.s. history. it was just over a week ago, a state investigation revealed 178 teachers, including 38 principals, woulding at 44 schools cheated for students on standardized tests in atlanta. on monday, interim superintendent erroll davis replaced four superintendents and one principal in the atlanta public school scandal. now a letter has been sent to the 178 teachers, principals and administrators who were on the state investigative report as either confessing to or being implicated in the cheating. davis has ordered that educators resign by next wednesday or they will face termination. he says the culture inside the school district has to change. >> people failed children, they cheated. and we can't allow that to happen and we can't allow anyone who was involved with that to remain in our system. >> now, staff replacement may

highlight a couple of points that i think make a big difference. realize we have a cohort population between 8 million and 11.5 million of individuals in the united states who are undocumented, who some say are illegal or not lawfully present. they are in a group that is cut off in part and formality from the main economy. this is unwise because immigrants, both skilled and unskilled, in this case, that 8 million to 11 million, provide the innovative engine in the economy in these relatively dark times. i'll address the issue of unemployment. but in these difficult economic times, they provide a certain component to the economy which allows us to innovate and grow at a rate that we otherwise would not. in short, immigrants of all types unaverage are net contributors to the economy, help the actual pie grow bigger, provide more of a pie to split among us all and in turn try to goose innovation in a couple of unanticipated ways. so first, kind of three big points. immigrants are a net contributor to the economy. it is easy to be distracted by the fiscal analysis which is about tax revenues and

at a sleepover allie rasmus is live with more, including the soda that's becoming a big part of the investigation. >> reporter: we're live in santa rosa. this agency is investigating the 14-year-old's death. now, the four girls at the sleepover, including the victim, said they passed around a soda that taste strange. the sheriff's office determined there was an unknown substance to it. the teens were at a sleepover at a home and all four got sick during the night. they started throwing up after they drank the soda. at first, the parents thought it was food poisoning, but then on sunday, one of them would not wake up. they called paramedics. and they determined she died. the crime investigations unit are looking into the death. a cause of death for that 14- year-old girl has not been determined yet. we've put in requests with sherr 6 investigators to find out -- sherr 6 investigators to find out where they are with the -- with the investigation. back to you. >> thank you. >>> pleasant hill police say they have two men in custody who may have used clone debit cards to rob bay area atms. officers fo

't happen. >> no. and when the markets do open, it will be a big indication of what happened. the dow jones is down to 86 points, to 12,595. that's come down from the earlier drop of 100 points right at the sound of the opening bell. overnight all of the major asian markets closed down. again, they will reopen again. they are definitely looking towards washington, d.c. to see what happened. the biggest loser, the shanghai composite. australia lost 1.5%. japan finished up. the german market has wandered back into positive territory, a few times within the last few hours. the french and british markets remain down from the closing. now, related in all of this cody traders are taking action. crude oil prices fell below $99 but are now offer -- hovering above that point. some credit agencies are warning that they will drop the u.s. rating from aaa to aa in the next couple of days if the uncertainty continues. one commodity benefiting is gold, gold prices are up $16 so far this morning. record prices there. just about 1600 -- $1,618 an ounce. coming up, we'll have more on whether the debt talks
